Who We are
The Mesa First Church of the Nazarene was first organized on February 27, 1948 after several years of a small group of families praying for and asking to begin their own Nazarene church in Mesa. The church began with a small group of dedicated families and has stayed in the same neighborhood for over 60 years now. Through seasons of faith, prayer, and sacrificial giving, the church has grown and expanded its East University property.
Mesa Naz is a neighborhood church that desires to reach out and impact the community for the Kingdom of God. We exist to serve everyone created in God’s image, and to invite all to become disciples of Jesus. We exist to serve the marginalized, those on the outside, and those that are wondering about who God is. We desire to love like Jesus, grow closer to God and to each other, and to serve those who aren’t yet a part of our church family.
What We Believe
We are a member of the Church of the Nazarene, a global protestant denomination that is Wesleyan in its theology and came out of the American Holiness movement at the turn of the 20th century. The mission of the Church of the Nazarene is to, “Make Christlike Disciples in the Nations.”
We Believe in God.
We Believe in the inspiration and authority of scripture.
We Believe in the Uniqueness of Jesus Christ.
We Believe in Entire Sanctification.
We Believe in the Church.

David and Brenda grew up in the same home town, Richmond, Indiana, and both graduated from Olivet Nazarene University in 1979. The Lord brought them to begin pastoring Mesa Naz in November 2015. David enjoys leading the staff and the board to transition the church for effective ministry in the neighborhood and community of Mesa; and appreciates the church’s willingness to be challenged and led in making disciples.
David and Brenda have two daughters and a son – all happily married – and seven grandchildren. Unfortunately, none of them live close to the valley of the sun. When they’re not FaceTiming their kids, their spouses, and grandchildren, David and Brenda enjoy traveling, reading, and watching sports, especially college basketball and Major League Baseball.
Ryan and Megan have been a part of Mesa Naz since August 2017. They met at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, where they graduated in 2009. After Point Loma, Ryan attended Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City where he graduated with a Masters degree in Intercultural Studies in 2014. Before coming to Mesa, Ryan and Megan served in youth ministry in northern California. They have two adorable kids, Caleb and Paisley.
Ryan works with the teens, helps organize our Life Groups and adult Journey Classes, and loves to preach and teach the Word of God. In His spare time he enjoys photography, cooking and eating BBQ, watching Star Trek, and chasing after Caleb and Paisley. Megan and Ryan love to watch movies, laugh, explore beautiful Arizona, and serve their Mesa Naz family.
Wilf & his family moved to Arizona from Canada via California in 1988. In 2010 God moved the Meeds family from Sedona to Mesa for Wilf to attend medical school. The warm welcome they received on their first visit to Mesa Naz made it clear that this was where God wanted them to worship and serve.
After medical school God opened the door for Wilf to serve here as the Worship Pastor. They continue to serve as missionaries with Global Training Network, equipping and encouraging pastors and leaders in majority world countries. Wilf has served as Worship Pastor in a variety of churches for most of his life. He has a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia, a Masters in Conducting from Azusa Pacific University, a Doctorate of Philosophy from Claremont Graduate University, and a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine.
At Mesa Naz our times of worship encourage the body of Christ to connect with God and one another. When we reach for Him, He is faithful to reach back to us. We are drawn into His presence and changed by His grace.
Wilf & Arlene count five as their children: Nathan & Sarah (married), Aaron, Crystal, and Jasmine. They are proud grandparents of Hunter, Miles, and Cruz. Spending time with family is one of their greatest joys.
Christy has lived her entire life in Mesa and graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in Family Studies. Christy loves to see little people grow spiritually.
“We should all always be growing, but it's more obvious sometimes in the little people. I get to watch them grow from very tiny believers who just know that Jesus loves them and they feel cared for at church to bigger kids who are applying scripture to their everyday life and sharing the good news of the gospel with their friends and family. What an honor to witness each of those stages so close up!”
Christy loves how our church feels like a family. Whether someone's been here for a week or twenty years, we do life together. We help each other raise our kids, care for our parents, and even start over sometimes. We cry together through hard times and celebrate in good times. Being part of a community like this helps us learn to love more like Jesus.
Christy is married to her college boyfriend, Dan. Together they have two boys, Daniel and Moses, who keep them on their toes. When the weather is nice, they enjoy hiking and exploring. The Williams love to travel and experience new things. Christy’s favorite things in the world are good coffee and a well-told story. In what little free time she has, she enjoys reading and writing.
Sharon is a second-generation born and raised in Mesa, Arizona. She has an Associate degree, and believes that the best training for her position as church secretary came from time working at a bank and being a yearbook editor in high school. Sharon came to Mesa Naz by the way of friendships with those who were already attending, primarily through her future mother-in-law.
Sharon loves the sense of community within our Mesa Naz family. This is where her faith became real and made commitments to salvation and sanctification through the Lord. Sharon’s been married to her husband, Guy, for 40 years, they have two sons, Greg and Daniel, and six grandchildren. In her spare time she loves to make memories with her family and teach her children’s Journey Class.
